Superbagneres offers opportunities for cross country skiing at elevations up to 2260 m. The resort used to be connected to the town below by a railway line. It was replaced by a gondola lift - also called an egg lift by the locals because the cabins look like eggs. When you come here, there are many activities to take part in such as skiing, paragliding, mountain biking, climbing and canyoning.
Cycling is a popular sport here. The Tour de France makes its way through the mountains every few years. There are many climbs in the area like Superbagnères, Port de Balès, Col du Portillon, Col de Portet d’Aspet, Col de Menté and the Col de Peyresourde. In fact, stage finishes of the Tour de France have been hosted at Superbagneres six times in the past.
Peyragudes is actually made up of two stations, Peyresourde and Agude. The resort came into existence when they they were merged in 1988. The resort is surrounded by 3000 m peaks and at this height the air is fresh and crisp. There are more than 230 snow cannons and piste-bashers at work all the time to keep the tracks well groomed. The mountain summit is situated at a height of 5266 ft. Other attractions including a snow park with a lift, airboard area, bordercross course and speed zone add to the thrill.
Luchon or Bagnères-de-Luchon as it is known in France is a famous commune and spa town. Tourists like to visit the many thermal springs here. The thermal springs are 48 in number. The town is a historical site and Roman artefacts have been found here in the past. There are also many promenades in the town and the most famous one is the Allées d'Étigny, an avenue of lime trees. At the southern end of this promenade you will find the hot baths or Thermes. On the promenades you will find many bar and restaurants. Try out local dishes such as peteram made from sheep guts and pistachio made from mutton and beans. If you are a shopaholic, there are a number of shops in the area to satisfy you.
